The seeds of this book were planted 14 years ago.

A team of veteran working TeleCommuters originated this Blog Book from their experience on the job -- and publishing the Telecommuting Jobs website since 1996.

This book is a blog because a printed book cannot follow -- or precipitate -- the advancement of the Work at Home Workforce. It's a 'work in progress' spurred on by input from TeleCommuters, their employers and those who want to benefit by all the Work at Home Workforce has to offer.

Think WWW stands for the World Wide Web?
There are times to consider it the Wild Wild Web.

The Internet has brought about many opportunities: Instant communications, instant information, virtual connection anywhere and the ability to use it to work from anywhere.

It also has brought many opportunities for those people who would like to take advantage of others. The Internet has brought about computer viruses and many scams. Unfortunately many of these scams are in the area of TeleCommuting work.

This is due to in part to the growing popularity and desire to work at home. This is also due to the anonymity of Internet communications. When viewing emails or webpages you don’t actually see the persons who created these. This makes it easy for scammers to attempt to take advantage of people.

Those who would rather steal their fortune than work for it are poisoning the waters of TeleCommuting. If there were no easy ill-gotten gains to be had, they would look elsewhere -- or even to honest endeavors.

To tame the Web for TeleCommuting, we just need to be aware.

To close the doors to scammers, this book will continue to provide clues as to potential work at home scams. And we invite all viewers to Comment about any scams they have encountered.

There are many signposts to potential work at home scams. One of the most popular of these is requiring money in order to gain employment. If the job requires money up-front in order to attain employment you must ask yourself is this a real job or a scam? Certainly there are jobs that require special equipment and sometimes the worker must purchase this equipment. However, this equipment is normally not only supplied by the employer.

Another type of employment that is popular on the Internet is MLM or multilevel marketing. There are many types of MLMs. Some of these have gained some level of legitimacy, however one must be cautious in this type of employment. Most of these MLMs sell some type of product or service. When you join a MLM you are brought in at a certain level of the organization. The person that brings you into the organization obtains some percentage of your sales. You, in turn, obtain some percentage of sales for those individuals you bring into the organization. Some people in the organization bring in so many people, directly and indirectly, that they no longer are involved in selling products.

Some MLMs come very close to ponzi schemes where members share membership fees brought in on the levels below them. Unfortunately only the best of sales wizards profit here -- most others fall by the wayside losing their time, their investment and their willingness to attempt TeleCommuting again.

To be TeleCommuters, we must be smart about many things -- this is just one of them. All we have to do to foil the scammers is see them for what they are.

To create more work at home jobs for all, employers need to know. Public officials, who have the power to provide incentives to employers to hire more TeleCommuters need to know. They need to know the feelings of workers about this. Workers who could make up an important alternative workforce that business can depend upon to do the job and save business overhead expenses in this economy. A workforce who can also make a substantial difference in energy-savings and the amount of commuting pollution.

As great as alternative energy sources like wind and solar are for our environment, nothing can save energy and cut pollution quicker than an expanded Work at Home Workforce. Cost is minimal to start TeleCommuters working -- and energy saving starts the very day they start working.

An expanded Work at Home Workforce parks a lot of cars, reducing energy waste and foreign oil dependence. Cars guzzle over 136 billion gallons of gasoline yearly. 60% of our oil is imported. We spend over $100,000 per minute to purchase foreign oil. Present full-time TeleCommuters alone now save over 4,439 million gallons per year.

Paul did not consciously try to start an environmentally conscious company. It happened naturally. Working out of a home office in Tampa, Florida, he provides database and application enterprise designing, report writing and project management services. As his company, Caaspre Consulting, LLC grew, he hired a full-time employee in Iowa and added contractors in Cincinnati and Florida. All had worked for him before in traditional offices. just how much real estate and overhead savings can be had by

To cut costs, Aetna sends Dover, Delaware workers home.

June 2009 -- Aetna is one of the major leaders in health care, dental,

pharmacy, group life, and disability insurance, and employee benefits.

Instead of letting workers go in Delaware, they're eliminating the cost

of leasing an entire building. They're training their customer-service

workers in TeleCommuting so most of its 169 staffers work from home

when Aetna's lease on its office space ends. "This is not a move being

made to reduce staff," said Aetna. "This is a move being made to

reduce real estate expenses."

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona cut $27,000 from its

budget in decreased rent and other workplace costs. The youth

mentoring organization chose to allow some of its employees to

TeleCommute. "Office space is expensive, and that's not where we

want our money to go," said the vice president of marketing.

CIGNA Corporate Services closed a building and discontinued space allocation for 11% of its workers. In 2002, CIGNA insurance's Corporate Services Department in Philadelphia was looking for more efficient ways to use real estate and reduce the cost of employee overhead. By 2005, 11% of CIGNA’s workforce worked full time from home.

Management Consulting Services company, George & Howe, was bursting at the seams with cramped quarters at their headquarters in Shelton, Connecticut. Already expanding into three new counties, Cannondale Financial's TeleCommuting program is allowing Unlimited Expansion Potential. TeleCommuting allows their employees to become highly familiar with the communities in which they work, while the systems in place provide ease of data submission to complete business transactions. The firm is able to pay a higher commission to its brokers instead of the standard because telecommuting reduces fixed overhead expenses. Greater workplace flexibility and compensation enable the company to attract and retain loyal, highly experienced employees.

Cisco's Internet Business Services Group has generated an estimated annual savings of $277 million in productivity by allowing employees to TeleCommute. A company survey shows Cisco employees spend about 63 percent of their time communicating and collaborating. 40 percent of Cisco employees are not located in the same city as their manager. Approximately 69 percent of the employees surveyed cited higher productivity when working remote, and 75 percent of those surveyed said the timeliness of their work improved. By telecommuting, 83 percent of employees said their ability to communicate and collaborate with co-workers was the same as, if not better than, it was when working on-site.

More than 26 percent, of 9,000 Aetna employees nationwide, are TeleCommuters. Of the 7,450 employees in Connecticut, 15 percent are TeleCommuters. Approximately half of those TeleCommute full time. Aetna projects the number of TeleCommuters to increase to 36% by 2010. During its most recent annual employee survey, Aetna reported a higher retention rate, a higher employee satisfaction rate and increased productivity. Aetna also has a large number of casual TeleCommuters. On a snowstorm day, almost half of its Connecticut employees could TeleCommute because the Virtual Private Network can provide them with remote access to Aetna.

Sharon looks like any other customer service rep...with one big exception. She handles claims for a major insurer from her house. Sharon worked in a busy call center until she got the chance to work part time in her own home, courtesy the marketing company Convergys. Convergys explains "it's a very fast growing segment for us, that we are growing. And we anticipate doubling or tripling in the next year or so." In these times of corporate cutbacks, thats refreshing news. Companies like Convergys say thanks to internet phone systems, they can save money farming out call center work to home based workers.

Smith Brothers Insurance company started a telecommuting program in 2002 when management wanted to retain a valued employee who was moving to Texas. Once they got her set up, they wanted to offer the option to the rest of the professional staff. TeleCommuting has been successful for all departments (Commercial Lines, Personal Lines, Life, Employee Benefits, Accounting). The type of work being done off-site is exactly the same as the work that is done in the office—servicing clients, processing policies, developing proposals, submitting claims to carriers, email communication with clients and carriers, creating spreadsheets, etc.

Which jobs can be sent home -- and be more profitable for both employer and TeleCommuter?

Most jobs that do not involve physical production, expensive specialized equipment, or extensive face-to-face customer contact can be TeleCommuting positions.

Because today most jobs are information-based jobs, they can be professionally accomplished from home.

You can't make yourself too at home in your home office -- it has to look like an office. You need to be reminded that when you are in your work space you are working.

TeleCommuters need to work independently and be self-driven. Some people cannot work in this manner and would make poor TeleCommuters.

3. I can work for hours at a time without interacting with other people. (true or false)
Some people need live interaction with others during their work day. There are jobs where you still interact with others, like sales, customer service, or technical support where you talk to people on the phone. But in most other TeleCommuting jobs there can be no interaction with others for days at a time except for some limited phone, Instant Messaging or live collaboration time with the office.

Realizing it will take more than us -- and more than a website to accomplish it -- we have initiated a Book that incorporates the thoughts, comments and input from all who can help push TeleCommuting to the forefront of those remedies for the energy, economy, environment and health conditions facing us. A 'living' Blog Book that doesn't stop updating until the Work at Home Workforce accomplishes all it is possible of.

They should be.

No other staffing strategy delivers the savings the Work at Home Workforce can. Companies can cut their overhead costs way back. Enough to retain staff to keep going. And to have as-needed talent waiting in the wings for opportunities that arise.

There is a job loss home remedy. An alternative to just getting tossed out of a job If you are a computer worker.

Computer workers facing layoff in this economy can tell their bosses: "You can hold the company's costs down by allowing me to work from home on an as-needed basis. There are numerous collaboration tools available, several free, to even allow me to work almost side by side with company staff."
